The compounding cost of inconsistent brand work.
Most brands waste 30–40% of their marketing budget on work that contradicts what came before. Here is how that compounds — and why consistency is the most underrated growth lever.
Brand building is a compounding exercise. Every piece of creative that ships either adds to or subtracts from the equity accumulated by everything that came before it. Consistency does not mean boring — it means that each new execution borrows from and reinforces the same underlying signal. When it is working, the brand gets louder with each campaign even if the spend stays flat.
Inconsistency works in reverse. A brand that looks different every six months is not building anything — it is restarting. The mental availability that last quarter's campaign worked to establish gets partially overwritten by this quarter's pivot. Audiences cannot hold a moving target in memory.
The cost shows up in media efficiency long before it shows up in the P&L. Consistent brands can achieve the same reach and recall with lower frequency. Inconsistent brands have to buy their way into memory on every campaign because nothing has been banked. Over a three-year period, the delta in effective CPM between a consistent and inconsistent brand at the same spend level is significant.
The root cause is almost always structural. Brand is owned by marketing, but creative is often briefed by whoever needs the asset — sales, product, retail. Without a centralised decision-maker and a shared creative system, every team optimises locally and the brand loses coherence globally.
The fix is not a brand bible. Brand bibles do not change behaviour — they sit in shared drives. The fix is a creative system with real guardrails, a review process with actual teeth, and a brand lead with enough authority to say no. Consistency is a governance problem dressed up as a design problem.
